Guest Speaker, Gary Pollard from the Yea Golf Club

2023 celebrates 100 years of golf on this Yea Golf Club site, with first official game on 6 June 1923. The club has celebrated with a din-ner for past and current members and a golf day is planned.
A club was originally formed in 1905 with a 4 hole course on what is now the High School site. In 1910 the Yea Race Club and Recreation Re-serve was created, with transfer of land from private to public land, State Government funded, and Committee of Management was formed to administer. In 1923 the golf club was formed, being a 9 hole sand scrape course, and extended to 18 holes in 1933. Club house was built in 1938. Golf was a winter sport, and sheep were grazed on the course to help maintain the grass! In 1984 the first grass green (10th hole) was trailed, using town water. In 1986 the Daiwa consortium subsidized the completion of converting the sands to grass greens, along with support from the Shire and many hours labour from local volunteers. Watering was initially from Yea River, and in 2002 access to recycled water from the treatment plant was made available, and an automated watering system was installed, with a grant from North South Pipeline (Melbourne Water). Further upgrades have included practice greens and a net installed. The clubhouse was upgraded in 2003. A $38,000 grant (Flood Recovery Funding) has been received to upgrade and reseal the carpark. Like all clubs and organizations, the club would not run without the support of our volunteers.

Three minute speaker. John Sinclair
John spoke of his recent visit to the western district to visit his son and
family, who have relocated from the local area to farm part of an old station farm in the Nareen district, which includes a 23 stand woolshed with the capacity to shed 2000 lambs undercover in the shed. It is high carrying, undulating red gum country, and the weather didn't disappoint, being cold and wet! John also had the opportunity to attend the Hamilton Sheepvention.
