Guest Speaker, Rod Cavanagh, who spoke of several of his passions in life!

Land conservation is high on Rods list, and he is involved in the Yellow Creek-Dairy Creek Landcare Group, who have recently produced a brochure “Caring for the Land” which was put together by Rod and his daughter, Annette. It is an educational tool, covering broad sub-jects on caring for the land. Rod has been a shearer, farmworker, trained stock dogs, along with his interests in land conservation and the management of stock and grasslands. He has travelled the inland extensively, shearing in many remote and interesting shearing sheds. His interest in farm dogs inspired him to write a book “Australian Sheep Dogs Training and Handling” which he self published and distributed 10,000 copies. Rod gave a demonstration of his effective whistle commands. Rod is the founding member of Australian Utility Stockdog Society, which hosts events for dogs such as trials, yards and shearing sheds, and cannot underestimate the value of dogs on farms.

Three Minute Speaker Tippy Anderson
The month of August, being a Blue Moon month, reminded Tippy of the Loy Krathong Festival, which is celebrated in Thailand on the full moon in November.
The festival pays respect to water—Water is Life. The ritual is to make vessels, decorated with flowers, candles or incense and float them down the river. Lanterns are also released into the sky.
